Overview

Fiilex Q5 COLOR lighting fixture

The Fiilex Q5 COLOR is a compact full-colour LED Fresnel with a five-inch lens and a 12–55° focusing range. Its DiCon Dense Matrix LED engine combines variable white, tint and colour control with an adjustable hard-light beam, useful for accents, controlled keys, product work and small studio directions.

The Q5 COLOR is distinct from Fiilex’s bi-colour designs and from the larger Q8 COLOR-LR. Its published limits are 175 W on AC and 160 W DC; the five-inch designation refers to the optical class, not its power. The head and power adapter have separate weights and handling requirements.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • A focusable colour LED provides beam shaping and remote white matching.
  • Electronic controls support repeatable settings.

Limitations

  • Spot, flood and saturated settings have different exposure behaviour.
  • Check generation, firmware and the installed wireless hardware.

Output and colour

The values below are Fiilex’s published centre illuminance in lux, transcribed from the model data-sheet diagrams. The diagrams also contain foot-candle values; those are a separate unit and are not substituted into this lux table. Spot and flood are identified independently at 3200 and 5600 K.

The large spot/flood difference reflects beam concentration rather than a comparable change in total generated light. Use the row for the focus position required to cover the subject. A diffuser, softbox, colour cue or intermediate focus requires its own assessment.

The documented white range is 2000–10000 K with green/magenta adjustment. The manufacturer lists typical CRI 95 and TLCI 90; these are different metrics and should not be conflated into a single “95+” score. Evaluate the intended camera and subject when matching other sources.

Modes include CCT, HSI, RGBW, gel, CIE xy and combined control options. The parameter layout depends on the selected mode and firmware. Choose a matching console personality and record the actual mode, colour values, intensity and focus when a cue must be repeated.

The system offers 0–100% dimming with Smooth and Sharp response options. Smooth is intended for gradual fades, while Sharp suits faster changes. A flicker-free product claim does not remove the need to test a particular frame rate, shutter, low level and effect combination.

Power and batteries

The Q5 data sheet specifies 24–48 V DC at the head’s 3-pin XLR input and 100–240 V AC, 50/60 Hz through the approved power system. Use the supplied/approved PSU and designated cables. An optional battery or D-tap accessory must be the correct Fiilex arrangement; a generic low-voltage camera battery is not automatically a direct substitute for the stated DC input.

The AC and DC maximum-power figures are separate manufacturer specifications. Include the actual PSU, cables, modifiers and stand/grid adapter in the package and load calculation. Route the power lead with strain relief so repositioning the Fresnel does not load the electrical connector.

The mount is described as a combination baby-stud female / junior-stud male arrangement. Use the correct orientation, engagement and rated support for the intended installation. Account for the moment of a front modifier and use proper secondary retention above people.

Control, cooling and camera operation

No integrated CRMX receiver or Ethernet input is listed in the checked Q5 data sheet. A compatible external receiver/Fiilex RPU is a separate part of a wireless package.

The head provides conventional wired DMX/RDM through five-pin XLR. Address the fixture, select the appropriate profile and terminate a final wired run. For wireless operation, include and configure the external receiver as well as the compatible data and power leads.

USB-A is specified as a 5 V / 1 A power output, while USB-C is for firmware updating. Neither description establishes a generic charging or substitute mains-input function. Check firmware and every intended control path on a used fixture before relying on it in a mixed package.

The guide lists Off, Variable, Silent and Full Speed fan modes. Silent means reduced fan speed; it is not the same as Off. The guide also states that fan-off operation time is limited, without providing a universal duration that can be promised for every output and ambient temperature.

The checked current data sheet states IPX5 water resistance and a 0–40°C operating range. The linked operating guide also contains a restriction against installation in damp/wet locations. Match the exact hardware revision, supply and current instructions before a weather-exposed setup; the water-resistance line alone does not resolve those document differences.

Keep air paths open, let the fixture cool before handling the front assembly and inspect the lens, accessory latch, yoke, focus mechanism and connectors. Test white, tint and saturated colours, low fades, fan response and remote control. Damage to a Fresnel lens or an insecure accessory lock is a practical service issue, not merely a cosmetic defect.

Modifiers, rigging and the working package

The Q5 is useful where an adjustable Fresnel beam is more valuable than the broad fixed emission of a panel. It can create a controlled edge, isolate a product area or provide a harder key with a familiar spot/flood workflow. Barndoors and external flags refine spill; they do not project a crisp gobo image.

A removable Fresnel arrangement and compatible speed ring/softbox options provide different source configurations. The sheet lists an approximately 80° beam without the Fresnel, but the tabulated spot/flood figures below are for the fitted optical system. Follow the instructions for any change of front accessory and account for the changed output.

For a larger soft key, compare the size of the installed softbox and remaining level with a dedicated panel or COB/modifier package. A Forza 300B II is a different bi-colour COB system requiring an added Fresnel for a similar focusing workflow; it is not an equivalent full-colour Q5 by wattage alone.

Alternatives and related fixtures

The Q8 COLOR-LR adds a larger eight-inch optical system, higher load, native CRMX and network input. The Q5 is a more compact Fresnel when its output and local/wired control fit the setup. Compare focus coverage and actual modifier output rather than describing one fixture as a universal tungsten or HMI replacement.
