Overview
The Kino Flo 4ft 4Bank is the classic four-tube fluorescent system: a relatively shallow fixture, removable reflector and louver, a detachable lamp harness and a remote electronic ballast. Its broad, elongated source is useful for faces, group coverage, soft edges and lighting in rooms where a bounced tungsten lamp would consume more working space.
Fluorescent 4Bank packages use older Select or later universal-voltage ballasts; identify the installed version. A Kino shell fitted with LED replacement tubes is a different electrical and optical system. Four-foot length, four lamps and a familiar black housing do not establish what power supply or tube type is inside a used package.

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- A bank of fluorescent tubes provides a broad close source.
- The established modifier and mounting system supports fast setup.
Limitations
- Lamp type, age and ballast configuration affect colour and output.
- Inspect older connectors, lamp holders and ballast cabling before use.
Practical uses
The 4ft 4Bank presents a long emitting area without requiring a separate bounce surface behind the camera. Close to a face, it can create a broad reflection and soft transition while retaining direction. Rotate it to change the relationship between the long dimension and the subject; the effect is not identical to a square LED panel of similar power.
It is also useful as a low-profile edge, a wall wash or a source integrated near set dressing with an appropriate rig. The flexible doors and removable louver control spill, but the body still requires secure support and open ventilation. Do not treat the fixture’s low weight as permission to rely on unsupported tape or an improvised overhead attachment.
| Setup | Working approach |
|---|---|
| Close interview key | Set lamp arrangement and diffusion, then check white balance through the camera. |
| Reflection or fill | Orient the bank for the required highlight and control spill with the correct louver. |
Output and colour
The original Kino Flo catalogue publishes the following four-foot, four-lamp readings. They describe that catalogue’s fluorescent configuration, not an LED-retrofitted shell or a guarantee for every later ballast generation. Lamp condition, operating temperature, louver, diffusion and ballast selection can change the delivered level.
| Distance | Centre illuminance |
|---|---|
| 4 ft / 1.22 m | 173 fc |
| 6 ft / 1.83 m | 84 fc |
| 8 ft / 2.44 m | 49 fc |
| 10 ft / 3.05 m | 32 fc |
Use matched lamp types and inspect tubes for age-related colour or output differences. KF32 and KF55 identify tungsten- and daylight-oriented lamp options, not continuously tunable white. Mixing tubes can create an intermediate-looking source, but it does not make a calibrated bi-colour LED system and may produce different reflections or spectral behaviour.
Kino warns that restricting airflow raises lamp temperature and can change colour, including the green spike. Keep the ends open and attach gels as instructed rather than sealing the louver. The electronic ballast operates at high frequency, but ‘flicker-free’ catalogue language is not a guarantee for every high-speed camera setting. Test the actual ballast, lamps, shutter and frame rate together.
Power and batteries
The older catalogue’s Select/Ve example draws 4.3 A with F75 lamps at 120 V. The later BAL-427 universal manual lists 2.6 A at 120 V for its F75 configuration. These are different documented generations. Quoting only the lower figure for an unidentified used system can understate the actual supply requirement.
Read the ballast label and use its own manual. Older voltage-specific Select units are not automatically universal-voltage; the later BAL-427 accepts 100–240 V. Do not estimate mains draw by simply adding four nominal tube wattages. The ballast, lamp drive and power factor are part of the input behaviour. A complete rental order should name the ballast generation as well as the fixture size.
Control, cooling and camera operation
Ordinary Select and universal versions switch lamps individually; that is stepped output control, not a continuous 0–100% fade. Some packages use Select/DMX ballasts for remote lamp control, but the presence of a 4Bank head alone does not establish DMX capability. Patch the ballast from the correct chart rather than borrowing an LED personality.
The manufacturer’s normal setting is 4ft for four-foot lamps. Its manual describes using 2ft mode on four-foot lamps in hot or restricted-airflow conditions to reduce colour-temperature and green-spike problems, with roughly half a stop less exposure. This is a documented operating adjustment, not an electronic CCT control or a general reason to block ventilation.
Modifiers, rigging and the working package
Turn off the ballast before connecting or disconnecting lamps, harnesses or extension cables. The universal manual prohibits SCR mains dimming and calls for a non-dim supply when fed through a dimmer pack. Use the specified cable family, keep locking connectors secure and observe the documented 75 ft maximum arrangement.
On an older system, inspect the shell, reflector, louver, tube clips, locking lamp connectors and colour-coded harness. Check the centre plate’s locking pin and safety attachment points. Test every lamp channel, both selector positions and the complete intended cable run. A fixture-only price can become expensive if the mount, cables, ballast and usable lamps are missing.
Transport fluorescent lamps in suitable protective cases and follow appropriate lamp recycling procedures. Handle broken or damaged tubes according to the lamp manufacturer’s guidance. LED retrofits should be documented as conversions and assessed using the replacement system’s own wiring, ballast requirements and photometrics.
Alternatives and related fixtures
A 2ft 4Bank fits tighter locations; a four-foot Double provides a narrower two-lamp source; a Flathead creates a larger eight-lamp surface. A current LED softlight offers fast colour and level control with a different power and accessory arrangement. The original 4Bank remains useful when a complete, healthy system is available and its source shape fits the scene; replacement-lamp availability is part of that decision.
| Fixture | Choose it for |
|---|---|
| Kino Flo FreeStyle LED | A separate LED engine and controller system. |
| Kino Flo Diva-Lite LED | An LED alternative with different colour modes and power hardware. |
