Overview

Lowel Tota-light lighting fixture

The Lowel Tota-light is a folding open-face tungsten-halogen floodlight with a wide throw and adjustable reflecting doors. It is useful for raising a room’s ambient level, lighting a background, photographic copy work or feeding a suitable umbrella or diffusion setup. Its long, narrow body packs very small for a traditional location light.

This is the original tungsten Tota-light, not the Tota-LED. Depending on the approved lamp and supply, the classic head is rated up to 750 W at 120 V or 800 W at 220/240 V. It does not contain a universal power supply, battery circuit or electronic colour controls.

Strengths and limitations

A continuous tungsten source gives direct, visible control of the lighting effect.Heat and electrical load remain central to placement and circuit planning.
Lamp and accessory choices adapt the source to its job.Dimming changes colour; lamp code, voltage and fixture limits must match.

Practical uses

A Tota is strongest when broad coverage is the point. Aim it into an appropriate bounce surface to raise the ambient level of a room, use it to light a background or feed a heat-rated umbrella/diffusion arrangement for a larger apparent source. It can cover more area than its closed travel size suggests.

The reflecting doors are part of the beam design. They can change vertical distribution and compensate for falloff when lighting a wall from above or below. They are not ordinary barn doors intended to be closed tightly around a hot lamp. For a precise small pool, a focusable Fresnel or profile light is usually a better tool.

SetupWorking approach
Broad bounceAim the open-face flood at a suitable bounce and control unwanted spill.
Background washUse distance and compatible flags to obtain the required field; this is not a focusing Fresnel.

Output and colour

Lowel’s Tota instructions publish the following centre readings at ten feet, described in the document as approximately three metres. Door position changes spread and level; it is not equivalent to a Fresnel focus knob.

FDN 500 W, 120 V27 fc / 295 lux22 fc / 235 lux3200 K

Manufacturer-published paired units are retained. Values depend on the specified lamp and reflector arrangement.

Choose the exact approved Tota globe. Lowel lists several outputs and colour temperatures, including 3000 K longer-life options and 3200 K filming lamps. Wattage alone does not identify the lamp’s shape, contact spacing or safe fit. A V-light globe is not an interchangeable Tota lamp.

Match lamp voltage to the supply. Changing a plug or power cord does not make an installed 120 V lamp suitable for 230/240 V. The 750 W maximum at 120 V and 800 W maximum at higher voltage are distinct catalogue ratings. Use the actual lamp and fixture instructions when selecting a replacement, and disconnect and cool the unit before relamping.

Power and batteries

A 750 W lamp at 120 V draws approximately 6.25 A. Include the rest of the location package when planning a circuit, and use suitable cable, connectors and any external tungsten dimmer. The original compact head is not intended for direct operation from a USB power bank or an unrelated battery without an appropriate documented system.

Electrical dimming reduces light and makes a tungsten filament warmer. If colour must remain close to the rated lamp value, change the geometry, use appropriate optical attenuation or choose an approved lower-wattage globe with the intended colour. Fit the final diffusion or conversion gel before deciding whether the available level is sufficient.

Control, cooling and camera operation

Use the documented control arrangement for this exact lamphead and power system. Check dimming behaviour, camera settings and thermal conditions at the intended working level.

Modifiers, rigging and the working package

Lowel requires the front protective screen to contain hot fragments in the event of lamp failure. Its instructions also prohibit operation with the reflecting doors closed beyond the notched safety stop. Never close the head for storage while the lamp is operating, and let it cool before packing it.

Keep ventilation open, maintain the filament orientation specified by Lowel and avoid close direct exposure of people, delicate objects or flammable materials. The instructions specifically discuss heat and ultraviolet exposure from open-face lamps. Use the documented accessories and spacing, manage cable pull, and provide suitable secondary suspension for a lamp mounted above people.

Alternatives and related fixtures

The Lowel Omni adds focus control; the DP offers more output in a focusable open-face arrangement; a Rifa provides a dedicated soft source. A modern LED flood is usually simpler for batteries, reduced heat and colour adjustment. The Tota remains useful as a compact broad tungsten source when its coverage fits the task and its heat, power and lamp requirements are acceptable.

Rental and used-fixture checks

Check the screen, reflecting doors, stops, hinges, sockets, stand fitting and tilt tension. Inspect the power cable, inline switch, connector and strain relief for heat damage or failed insulation. A tiny, inexpensive used light can still need extensive servicing, particularly if the lamp contacts are worn or the reflecting surfaces are damaged.

Confirm that the correct screen and a usable cord are included. Test the light with the intended approved globe after electrical condition is established. A missing screen is an essential missing part, not an optional accessory that can be ignored because the lamp illuminates.
