Overview

amaran 200x S bi-colour LED light — manufacturer product photograph

The amaran 200x S is a 200W bi-colour Bowens-mount LED built around an upgraded dual-blue light engine. It concentrates on white-light quality and straightforward operation for interviews, home studios, livestreams and small location crews.

The “S” version is an important model distinction. It retains the compact approach of the original 200x while using a revised LED chipset. It is also different from the daylight-only 200d S and the full-colour 150c/300c. Those models should not be treated as interchangeable specifications.

The product page lists TLCI 98+ and TM-30 Rf 97; the combined support table lists TLCI 96 and Rf 96. The 229 W input and 200 W lamp ratings are consistent across those references.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • 2700–6500 K tuning helps with warm interiors and mixed white sources.
  • The S-generation dual-blue chipset improves spectral similarity over the original series.
  • Bowens modifiers and integrated controls make a straightforward interview or studio package.

Limitations

  • White-light tuning does not provide RGB colour or dedicated green/magenta control.
  • A high spectral score does not establish a perfect match on every camera or material.
  • Cooling, adapter support and the complete modifier load still need planning; native DMX and CRMX are absent.

Practical uses

The standard manufacturer package lists the light, Bowens protection cover, Hyper Reflector, AC supply and AC cable. Check dealer bundles separately for a stand, softbox or battery system.

Choose the 200x S when tunable white light, strong published spectral similarity and simple controls suit the work. Choose a colour-capable head when saturated colours are a real requirement. Compare the original 200x carefully when buying used: a similar housing and model number do not identify the revised S-series engine.

For larger crews requiring a more extensive wired control system, the Nanlite Forza 300B II and professional Light Storm ranges are useful reference points. Compare the complete working kit, including controller, power and modifiers, rather than only the advertised LED wattage.

SetupWorking approach
Soft interview keyUse a compatible softbox close to the subject, with the diffusion and grid selected before setting exposure.
Bounce or diffusionFill the useful area evenly; a narrow reflector’s centre reading does not describe an evenly filled frame.
Background or edgeChoose a supported modifier and working distance for the intended field and shadow quality.
Creator studioUse onboard or Sidus Link control and support the external power adapter independently of the head connector.

Output and colour

At 5,600K, amaran publishes 6,400 lux at 1m bare and 45,400 lux at 1m with the Hyper Reflector. The reflector’s narrow distribution explains why the central reading rises so much. These values should not be used as a proxy for output through a softbox.

The published bare and reflector beam angles are 111.4° and 26.1°. A larger bare field can be useful for filling diffusion; a narrower reflector can be useful for a more concentrated hit. The brightest centre reading is not automatically the most useful configuration for a broad key.

The dual-blue chipset is the major reason to distinguish the S generation. The manufacturer technical page lists SSI above 90 against tungsten and above 89 against D5600, alongside its CRI, TLCI and TM-30 figures.

SSI measures spectral similarity to a reference. It does not mean two lights are identical, nor does it guarantee the same appearance on every camera and material. For product photography, wardrobe or mixed lighting, assess the actual scene and camera instead of relying on one score. The 200x S remains a white-light fixture; it does not provide the saturated colours of an RGBWW model.

Power and batteries

The 229W maximum consumption is the planning figure for the electrical supply; “200W” describes its LED output class. The head incorporates its controls but still uses a separate power adapter. Find a supported place for that adapter and route the DC cable without loading the connector.

amaran documents a 48V DC input and an optional Aputure 2-Bay Battery Power Station arrangement. The battery station and suitable batteries are separate from the standard package. Do not connect a convenient low-voltage battery simply because a cable can be made to fit.

For a mobile setup, confirm continuous power delivery as well as battery energy. Watt-hours divided by watts gives an idealized runtime estimate, not a guarantee once conversion losses, battery condition and reserves are included.

Control, cooling and camera operation

The documented controls are on the fixture and through Sidus Link. The manufacturer lists nine effects, including television, fire and lightning-style options. Test an effect against the scene rather than accepting the default speed and brightness: a believable motivated flicker usually needs a specific rhythm and direction.

This model does not list native DMX, CRMX or Ethernet control. If a production needs a console patch, determine a suitable supported workflow or choose a fixture designed for it. Bluetooth convenience on a small shoot and integration into a large lighting network are different requirements.

The fixture is actively cooled, and the stated operating range is −10°C to +40°C. Keep air paths clear and test the actual noise at the microphone position. Quiet fan marketing is not a measurement of the complete scene.

The cited specification does not provide an outdoor ingress rating for the complete setup. Treat exposed weather as a separate protection problem, including the supply, plug connections and distribution. The ability to power a lamp outdoors does not make the power chain weatherproof.

Modifiers, rigging and the working package

The Bowens mount gives access to supported softboxes, lanterns and other modifiers. A softbox should be chosen for the size of the subject and the space available, not solely because it attaches to the fixture. Larger modifiers also require more physical support and can use more of the available exposure.

For a seated interview, get the soft source close enough to look large from the subject’s perspective, then control spill with its grid or flags. Moving the light back makes it cover a wider working area but also reduces exposure and changes apparent softness.

Check the current compatibility information before attaching an optical modifier. A generic Bowens connection does not establish that a specific Fresnel or projector is designed for this source.

Rental and used-fixture checks

Confirm the S designation on the fixture and identify the correct power adapter. Inspect the Bowens latch, bracket, stand connection, fan vents and locking DC socket. Run a low-level fade and the required white setting, test app pairing, and check the entire head/modifier arrangement for play before raising it.
