Overview
The amaran COB 60x S is a compact bi-colour COB light for close keys, product scenes and small lighting kits. Its upgraded S-series engine pairs a 65 W lamp-power rating with a full-size Bowens mount and a supplied Mini Hyper Reflector.
The COB 60x S uses a revised chipset compared with the original amaran COB 60x. Aputure’s focusable LS 60x is a separate fixture. Its small head, external adapter and battery-holder arrangement are a different package from those larger location fixtures.

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- 2700–6500 K tuning helps with warm interiors and mixed white sources.
- The S-generation dual-blue chipset improves spectral similarity over the original series.
- The compact head and full-size Bowens mount suit a small travel kit.
Limitations
- White-light tuning does not provide RGB colour or dedicated green/magenta control.
- A high spectral score does not establish a perfect match on every camera or material.
- Cooling, adapter support and the complete modifier load still need planning; native DMX and CRMX are absent.
Practical uses
The variable-white 60x S is useful where a small lamp must move between warm interiors and cooler ambient light. It can provide a close interview key, product accent or controlled fill with a suitable Bowens modifier, without carrying separate daylight and tungsten-balanced heads.
The S suffix identifies the upgraded spectral engine. It is not the original COB 60x and is not the focusable Aputure LS 60x. The Mini Hyper Reflector sets a narrow fixed optical arrangement; there is no integrated spot-to-flood focusing mechanism.
At 695 g, the cube-shaped head is convenient for a small kit, but its listed mass does not include a complete stand, adapter, batteries or modifier. A broad softbox can dominate the supported load and turning force even on this small lamp.
| Setup | Working approach |
|---|---|
| Soft interview key | Use a compatible softbox close to the subject, with the diffusion and grid selected before setting exposure. |
| Bounce or diffusion | Fill the useful area evenly; a narrow reflector’s centre reading does not describe an evenly filled frame. |
| Background or edge | Choose a supported modifier and working distance for the intended field and shadow quality. |
| Small battery setup | Use the supplied dual NP-F plate or the approved D-Tap arrangement, and test the actual battery and cable. |
Output and colour
The table below is transcribed from the model’s S-series operating manual. Values are lux at 0.5, 1 and 3 m, with bare-head and Mini Hyper Reflector configurations separated. The approximately 14° reflector beam is much narrower than the bare source, explaining why its central lux figure is so much larger.
A reflector hotspot is not a softbox specification. If the job needs a broad key, judge the actual diffuser, working distance and subject coverage rather than treating the highest central reading as general-purpose brightness.
The current product page’s 2,545 lux bare and 35,100 lux reflector headline correspond to the manual’s 6500 K row. At 5600 K the manual gives 2,427 and 33,300 lux at 1 m. Keeping the CCT visible avoids presenting the maximum as a 5600 K result.
| Configuration | 0.5 m, lux | 1 m, lux | 3 m, lux |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2700 K, bare | 8,270 | 2,087 | 252 |
| 2700 K, Mini Hyper Reflector | 96,100 | 27,750 | 2,965 |
| 3200 K, bare | 8,300 | 2,100 | 252 |
| 3200 K, Mini Hyper Reflector | 97,400 | 28,160 | 2,980 |
| 5600 K, bare | 9,560 | 2,427 | 288 |
| 5600 K, Mini Hyper Reflector | 114,700 | 33,300 | 3,510 |
| 6500 K, bare | 9,560 | 2,545 | 302 |
| 6500 K, Mini Hyper Reflector | 120,800 | 35,100 | 3,700 |
The current page lists CRI 96+, TLCI 97+, SSI D32 90+ and D56 87+. The manual lists rounded CRI 97 and SSI D32 91. The current page and original manual list different rounded colour-quality figures.
SSI, CRI, TLCI and TM-30 describe different aspects of colour fidelity. None guarantees that two brands will match perfectly on every camera, fabric or reflective product. Check critical colours with the intended camera and the final optical accessories.
The warm/cool engine adjusts CCT in 100 K steps, with the manual listing quick selections at 2700, 3200, 4300, 5600 and 6500 K. It does not provide RGB colour or a dedicated green/magenta adjustment.
Power and batteries
The lamp is rated at 65 W maximum output power, while the maximum input is 78 W. Use the input rating for electrical planning. The supplied adapter accepts 100–240 V AC and provides the specified 19 V DC feed through the locking connector.
The manufacturer also specifies a 12–16.8 V V-mount battery arrangement and supplies the illustrated battery case/holder system in the standard manual package. Batteries are separate. Follow the approved cable, voltage and current requirements rather than adapting an unrelated connector.
The battery-holder attachment and the lamp’s 1/4-inch mounting connection need to be secured as described in the manual. Include battery mass in handheld or stand-mounted planning. Runtime depends on the actual battery, conversion losses and output; the 65 W model class is not a battery-duration claim.
Release the connector with its lock rather than pulling the cord. Support the adapter and cable independently and leave enough movement for the bracket to tilt without straining the socket.
The standard package includes a dual Sony NP-F battery plate. amaran also documents a separate D-Tap-to-5.5 mm barrel cable for compatible external batteries. The compact head uses its specified low-voltage supply; it does not take the 48 V supply used by larger amaran COB models.
Control, cooling and camera operation
Onboard controls provide the basic operating settings; Sidus Link adds Bluetooth remote control, firmware updates and effects. This model is documented for Sidus Link rather than assuming that every newer amaran-app feature applies to an older fixture.
The nine effects are paparazzi, fireworks, faulty bulb, lightning, TV, pulsing, strobe, explosion and fire.
Neither the page nor the manual lists native DMX or CRMX input. Verify a proposed control bridge as a complete external system before including it in a console-controlled package. Test pairing, fades and the intended shutter/frame rate before a timed cue.
The current page advertises up to 80 m Bluetooth operation, while the manual lists 60 m. Conditions and source revision differ; neither is a guarantee through scenery. Test the actual control route at the intended lamp position.
Modifiers, rigging and the working package
The native Bowens mount accepts compatible reflectors and soft-light modifiers without an FM-to-Bowens adapter. The bracket includes an umbrella holder. Check each accessory’s power limit, emitter clearance and weight support rather than relying on bayonet fit alone.
Active cooling and open vents are part of the design. Listen at the microphone position after the lamp warms up; this compact head is not documented as a passively cooled fixture. Keep the lamp and supply within their stated environmental instructions.
Inspect the COB protection, mount latch, bracket, locking DC socket and fan. Check low dimming, both CCT endpoints, app pairing and battery operation. Remove the emitter cap before operation and replace it for transport after the lamp cools.

What people are saying
Owner report: useful size and NP-F power, with audible fan noise
In a customer review at Rubber Monkey, Robert liked the compact size, full-size Bowens mount and NP-F operation for interview work. He also reported a high-pitched fan that remained noticeable when dimmed. This is one owner’s account of their unit.

Rental and used-fixture checks
Confirm the S designation on the fixture and identify the correct power adapter. Inspect the Bowens latch, bracket, stand connection, fan vents and locking DC socket. Run a low-level fade and the required white setting, test app pairing, and check the entire head/modifier arrangement for play before raising it.
