Overview
The amaran F21x is a 2 × 1-foot, 100W bi-colour flexible LED mat for interviews, tight locations and portable soft-light work. It uses an X-shaped support frame, a separate controller and a fitted diffusion package.

The F21x adjusts white light from 2,500–7,500K. It is distinct from the RGBWW F21c and the larger square F22x; the heads, controllers and extension cables are not interchangeable across those sizes and versions.

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- A thin, light emitting surface suits restricted locations.
- The rectangular format creates a broad source or long reflection.
- Passive head and controller cooling suit quiet interview work.
Limitations
- Bi-colour only, without the F21c’s RGB channels.
- The complete package includes a controller, supply, frame and cable.
- A flexible mat still needs protection against sharp creases, abrasion and connector strain.
Practical uses
| Setup | Working approach |
|---|---|
| Interview key | Set the frame horizontally for a wide source or vertically for a taller reflection. Fit the desired diffusion and check shadow softness at the actual subject distance. |
| Small room or vehicle | Use the thin face to reduce intrusion into the set. Keep the controller accessible, and support the frame through its intended attachment points rather than hanging the mat by a power lead. |
| Product work | Use the rectangular shape to build a deliberate highlight. Move the mat and subject before adding output when the reflection is in the wrong place. |
Output and colour
The manufacturer’s maximum 3,960-lux headline occurs at a different CCT from the 5,600K comparison below. Keep the colour setting and diffusion attached to every value. A broad mat spreads light differently from a reflector-equipped COB.
| 5,600K configuration | 1m | 3m |
|---|---|---|
| Bare mat | 3,632 lux | 400 lux |
| Half-stop softbox configuration | 1,944 lux | 263 lux |
CRI, TLCI and SSI describe different aspects of colour reproduction. A high CRI value does not establish a perfect match to daylight, tungsten or another LED. Compare important skin tones, wardrobe and product colours on the camera used for the job.
Power and batteries
The matching AC supply outputs 48V DC to the controller. The light’s LED rating is 100W and maximum input is listed as 120W, so the head rating should not be used as the complete socket load.
Controllers are available with different battery plates. Use the matching V-mount or Gold-mount version and a supported voltage and continuous-current rating. Full-power behaviour must be checked with the actual battery, rather than inferred from its capacity in watt-hours.
Control, cooling and camera operation
The controller offers local intensity and CCT adjustment, Sidus Link Bluetooth and wired DMX through the compatible optional USB-C adapter. Patch the x-series personality rather than the colour model’s profile.
The head and controller use passive cooling. Frequency adjustment can help with a specific camera/shutter combination, but it still requires a camera test. Keep the final frequency, intensity and CCT in the lighting notes.
Modifiers, rigging and the working package
The size-matched softbox, diffusion and grid work with the F21 support frame. The optional F21 lantern changes the spread and apparent shape; confirm the actual kit packing list before comparing prices.
The support rods engage the corner mounts. Assemble and dismantle them deliberately, keep the cable supported and avoid forcing folds through the LED surface. Protect the emitting face in the case and inspect frame corners after transport.
Alternatives and related fixtures
| Fixture | Choose it for |
|---|---|
| amaran F21c | The same nominal rectangular format with RGBWW colour capability. |
| amaran F22x | A larger 2 × 2-foot bi-colour mat. |
| amaran F22c | A larger RGBWW mat when both emitting area and colour control are needed. |

Rental and used-fixture checks
- Confirm the exact model and generation on the label, then compare the included supply, cables and accessories with the matching manual.
- Inspect the emitting face, housing, connector pins, mounting threads and locks. Test every supplied modifier and make sure the release mechanism fully engages.
- Run the light at the intended output until it reaches normal operating temperature. Check for flicker, unexpected shutdown, uneven emitters and unusual fan noise.
- Test white light and every available colour mode; check low-level dimming, blackout and the camera/shutter combination used for the job.
- Inspect the mat’s folds, LED rows, frame corners and head cable. Confirm that the controller and extension belong to the same size and x/c version.
