Overview
The amaran Ray 120c is a 120W full-colour Bowens-mount COB light using the OmniColor engine. It is suited to a portable key light for small crews and location interviews, with adjustable white light, saturated colour and electronic effects in one fixture.

The 120c keeps the thin form of the 60c while offering more output for diffusion and bounce. Its higher power demand makes the USB-C supply and cable part of the lighting package rather than incidental phone accessories.

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Full-size Bowens mount supports several ways of shaping one point source.
- Standard and expanded CCT modes cover different white-light requirements.
- Compact head and several external power routes.
Limitations
- The emitting face is small; soft interview light requires a modifier or bounce.
- No wired DMX is listed for this size, despite the USB-C power port.
- Fan-off operation reduces available output; IP54 does not make the complete power package waterproof.
Practical uses
| Setup | Working approach |
|---|---|
| Interview key | Place a softbox close enough to create the intended wrap, feather it across the subject and use negative fill to control spill. Set the fan mode before exposure. |
| Colour accent | Aim the bare head or a suitable reflector at a wall or background object. Compare the actual saturated colour on camera; the white-light lux figure does not predict blue or red exposure. |
| Portable bounce | Keep the illuminated bounce inside the frame of the reflector and check the edges of the source. A battery grip helps when moving quickly between close setups. |
Output and colour
Use standard CCT for ordinary white-light matching; CCT+ expands the displayed range to 1,800–20,000K. White-light readings and saturated-colour readings describe different channel mixes. The product page’s maximum bare-head figure is a peak reference, so use the model’s photometric table for a specific CCT and optic.
For a specific CCT, distance and accessory, use the model’s manufacturer specification and photometric reference. Test the final lighting and camera combination when colour consistency or high-speed recording is critical.
CRI, TLCI and SSI describe different aspects of colour reproduction. A high CRI value does not establish a perfect match to daylight, tungsten or another LED. Compare important skin tones, wardrobe and product colours on the camera used for the job.
Power and batteries
USB-C PD, the rated DC input or the amaran Ace E-Lock battery connection can power this head. Use a supply and cable that meet the model’s required voltage and continuous wattage. A USB-C connector alone does not establish that a power bank can run the light at full output.
The Peak battery accessories are optional. Choose the compatible Peak model, account for the added grip weight and check battery behaviour at the actual colour and intensity used in the scene. Reserve enough capacity for rehearsal as well as the recorded take.
Control, cooling and camera operation
The FlowTurn knob, local display and amaran app provide the main control routes. NFC assists pairing; Bluetooth remains the wireless control link. Record intensity, CCT, tint and fan mode when rebuilding a cue.
The smaller Ray models do not inherit the 360c/660c DMX capability. Choose an app-based workflow or a fixture with a documented console interface when repeatable network cues are essential.
Modifiers, rigging and the working package
A Bowens softbox enlarges the apparent source; a reflector or compatible Fresnel changes beam concentration. Compare full-field coverage rather than choosing from the brightest centre reading alone.
The kit includes an Octa Dome 30, diffusion, grid, mounting grip and AC power package. Larger softboxes add leverage to a very small head, so confirm the current compatibility sheet and support the complete assembly.
Alternatives and related fixtures
| Fixture | Choose it for |
|---|---|
| amaran 300c | An earlier RGBWW Bowens COB; compare colour reproduction, control routes and the external power supply. |
| amaran 200x S | A white-light alternative when saturated colour is unnecessary. |
| amaran F22c | A broad flexible RGBWW source when a thin emitting surface matters more than point-source optics. |

Rental and used-fixture checks
- Confirm the exact model and generation on the label, then compare the included supply, cables and accessories with the matching manual.
- Inspect the emitting face, housing, connector pins, mounting threads and locks. Test every supplied modifier and make sure the release mechanism fully engages.
- Run the light at the intended output until it reaches normal operating temperature. Check for flicker, unexpected shutdown, uneven emitters and unusual fan noise.
- Test white light and every available colour mode; check low-level dimming, blackout and the camera/shutter combination used for the job.
