Creamsource SpaceX with its six LED engines
Creamsource SpaceX with its six LED engines

The Creamsource SpaceX is a 1,200W full-colour LED space light built around six RGBWA engines. Its integrated power supply, 115° native distribution and provision for diffusion skirts suit studio overhead work, broad ambient light and large soft-source setups.

SpaceX is a separate model from the earlier Sky. It uses active fan cooling and an IP20 housing, rather than the Sky’s passive cooling and IP65 head. Its 18kg head is lighter than the older Sky, but the complete overhead package still needs planned handling and support.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • The six-engine face and skirt attachment suit broad overhead base lighting.
  • The power supply is integrated, removing a separate heavy supply from the floor package.

Limitations

  • IP20 requires a protected, dry operating environment.
  • Fan behaviour matters for dialogue, and Pause is not a permanent silent setting.
  • Adding six 50° optics changes coverage; the concentrated setup is not equivalent to the naked space-light configuration.

Practical uses

SetupWorking approach
Studio top lightChoose diffusion and black skirt depth for the intended pool. Check light escaping above and beside the skirt.
Large soft keyUse the yoke and an appropriate softbox or diffusion setup; position the source according to the desired reflection and wrap.
Broad colour baseMatch colour on the production camera and set materials, then record the cue and installed optics for continuity.

Output and colour

SpaceX has a native 115° spread. The optional six-piece 50° optics set concentrates the field; the manual describes roughly doubled centre intensity. That is a beam-distribution change, not doubled electrical output. Evaluate the final skirt, diffusion and distance together before comparing it with a panel or tungsten space light.

For saturated colours, judge the result on the production camera and actual set materials. A white-light CRI figure does not describe the exposure or spectral behaviour of every colour cue. Record the chosen colour mode, values and modifier for repeat setups.

Power and batteries

The manual specifies a 100–240V AC supply and a 1,200W load. This is an AC fixture; do not connect a battery to an assumed low-voltage port. For portable AC power, check inverter continuous output, available energy and the actual unit’s input label.

Control, cooling and camera operation

Built-in LumenRadio and wired 5-pin DMX provide the principal console paths. The manual describes wired DMX taking precedence when both signals are present. Match the chosen scenario to the desk, and verify the lost-signal behaviour before relying on a long overhead cue.

The manual describes High Speed mode up to 2,000fps, with less-fluid dimming and colour changes. Establish that mode before programming a subtle fade. Camera-sync flashing and continuous high-speed illumination are different tasks, so test the intended camera and cue together.

Modifiers, rigging and the working package

Fit the correct skirt or speed ring to the three provided attachment points, and check all six optical locks if using intensifiers. Include skirt, optics, yoke and cables in the working package. The 590mm face also needs physical clearance around adjacent fixtures and set pieces.

Rental and used-fixture checks

  • Confirm SpaceX and IP20 identification; do not substitute the earlier Sky’s weather rating.
  • Inspect all six fans and filters, running the fixture after warm-up.
  • Count and test all six intensifier optics and skirt attachment pins.
  • Use the conservative 40°C manual limit until the supplier confirms the applicable revision.
