Overview

Nanlite PavoTube II 60XR lighting fixture

The Nanlite PavoTube II 60XR is a long RGBWW LED pixel tube with an internal battery and built-in LumenRadio CRMX. Its 32 controllable sections and 2.22 m body make it useful for large practical-light designs, long reflected highlights, stage accents and animated light across a substantial length.

The “8 ft” description is a nominal size class: Nanlite’s physical length is 2220 mm, or 87.4 inches. The XR version includes an integrated CRMX receiver. The original 60X is a closely related tube without the XR’s integrated CRMX receiver; verify the label before specifying wireless-DMX control.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • An internal battery removes the power lead for mobile accents and visible practicals.
  • The 2.22 m tube creates a long continuous highlight and has 32 pixel sections.
  • Integrated CRMX supports a wireless DMX rig.

Limitations

  • Charging, battery condition and colour-specific power draw affect usable runtime.
  • Its length requires suitable transport space and well-spaced supports.
  • Wired control still requires the correct adapter and personality.

Practical uses

The 60XR can form a long visible practical, illuminate a wide edge or create a continuous highlight across a reflective surface. Its length is particularly useful when the light needs to span a large portion of a set. It also demands an appropriate support arrangement and transport route; it is not handled like a short wand.

A long tube is a line source. Close to a subject, its geometry produces a different falloff from a small point source, so a simple one-metre inverse-square extrapolation is unreliable. Use the published distances or measure the intended position, especially when building a cue across a face, vehicle or set wall.

Thirty-two pixel sections allow a longer animated gradient or chase than a short tube. Set the pixel grouping and console personality to the actual cue; maximum segmentation is not always necessary for a smooth broad effect. Check the camera view for visible banding or transitions before recording a moving effect.

SetupWorking approach
Visible practicalPlan framing and exposure with the tube in shot so it retains the intended colour and surface detail.
Reflected highlightRotate and position the tube while watching its reflection; source length and distance determine the highlight shape.
Pixel interactionSet the direction, timing and repeatability of the animation, then test at the actual camera frame rate and shutter.

Output and colour

The table reproduces Nanlite’s bare-tube centre-illuminance values for the named X/XR size, in lux. White settings and saturated colours are listed separately because equal dimmer percentages do not produce equal illuminance. The measurements are manufacturer figures rather than a site retest.

A tube has meaningful physical length, especially at close distances. Its output should not be compared with a narrowly focused spotlight using only one headline lux number. Check the coverage, intended orientation and actual reflected or incident level at the subject.

Bare tube, no added diffusion or grid. Manufacturer family table identifies the corresponding X/XR size.

The RGBWW engine provides 2700–12000 K white light with green/magenta adjustment, plus hue/saturation and built-in effects. Nanlite lists average CRI 97 and TLCI 98. Those averages do not describe every saturated colour or establish a perfect spectral match with another tube at the same Kelvin value.

The 32 physical pixel sections can be grouped according to the selected mode and firmware. Match the console’s personality, pixel count, bit depth and colour mode to the tube. A whole-fixture dimmer/colour profile is not the same thing as independently addressing all sections.

Save the white/tint setting or colour values, pixel arrangement, effect speed and level for a repeatable cue. Where a visible effect must synchronize with other fixtures, verify the behaviour through the intended control path instead of relying on two independently started local effects.

Power and batteries

The XR manual lists an 18.5 V / 8800 mAh internal battery and a 15 V / 6.5 A adapter. The manufacturer rates the fixture at 106 W. These are published component ratings; do not treat their arithmetic as an independently measured whole-system draw. The designated adapter accepts 100–240 V AC, 50/60 Hz and can power the tube for longer setups.

Nanlite’s US product description quotes 1 hour 57 minutes at 100% brightness on a charged internal battery. That is a manufacturer runtime claim, not a guarantee for an aged pack or every condition. Nanlite US gives conflicting recharge durations in the prose and specification table, so confirm charging time for the supplied adapter and actual unit before scheduling a tight turnaround.

Route and support the adapter lead when using external power. A powered tube is still a mounted load, and a cable tug must not pull it from a clip. Protect the display, connectors and internal battery from impact or excessive heat; a dented body or swollen battery calls for qualified inspection.

Control, cooling and camera operation

Built-in LumenRadio CRMX, Bluetooth/NANLINK and Nanlite 2.4 GHz. For native CRMX operation, pair the XR receiver with the intended transmitter and use the matching console profile. An original 60X needs a different receiver/control arrangement.

Wired DMX/RDM uses the correct Nanlite CB-DMX-ACP adapter arrangement at the tube’s control connector. Include the necessary adapter and cables in a hire, set the address and terminate the final fixture in a wired run. The USB-C port is identified for firmware updates, not as a general-purpose DMX or charging socket.

The locking local controls help protect a set level. Test low fades, blackout, app reconnection and radio or wired signal loss in the selected mode. Check firmware on mixed used/rental tubes, because available effects and DMX handling can differ by revision.

Modifiers, rigging and the working package

The long 2.90 kg body needs support distributed as specified for the chosen clips, frame or mounting accessory. Use the dedicated long-tube floor-stand arrangement if free-standing, protect the tube from bending loads and account for the moment created when mounting it horizontally. Plan doorways, lifts, vehicle access and the case length before choosing the largest tube.

The body provides 1/4-20 mounting receivers for approved accessories. Use the correct thread engagement and mounting hardware without crushing the tube or drilling into its battery housing. An elevated fixture needs appropriate secondary retention and a support rated for the full arrangement.

Nanlite lists separate model-specific IP68 waterproof housings. That rating belongs to the accessory system when properly assembled, not to the naked tube, adapter or unsealed connection. The corresponding instructions call for protection from wet conditions and specify an ambient limit for each size.

On a used unit, inspect diffusion, body straightness, clips, threads and connectors, then test battery health, every colour, pixel transitions and both local and remote control. Uneven sections or unexpected shutdowns warrant diagnosis before relying on the tube in a time-sensitive setup.

Alternatives and related fixtures

An Astera Titan Tube is a shorter fixture with a different pixel/control ecosystem. The 30X/XR class reduces transport and support demands; the 60XR earns its place when the physical length is useful to the image. Neither model’s radio, battery or mounting specifications should be inferred from the generic word “tube.”
