DMX Address

A DMX address, usually meaning the start address, identifies the first control slot a fixture uses in a DMX universe. The fixture’s selected personality determines the size and meaning of the following block of slots.

Address and footprint

For an illustrative fixture using 12 slots, start address 101 occupies slots 101 through 112. Another independently controlled fixture can start at 113 or another unused block. A suitable start address must leave room for the complete footprint within the universe.

Practical example

Set the fixture’s universe or physical DMX line, start address and personality, then enter the matching information in the controller’s patch. If colour controls behave like intensity controls, check the mode as well as the address. A correct starting number cannot fix the wrong channel map.

Console channels are different

The console’s fixture number or channel number is an operator-facing identifier. It can be patched to a different DMX address. Two matching fixtures can intentionally share an address to follow the same values, but that does not provide independent control and should be clearly documented.

Equipment examples

The Creamsource Vortex8 is a multi-parameter fixture: its address must be patched alongside the selected control mode.
