DMX Personality

A DMX personality is a fixture’s selected control mode and channel arrangement. It determines which parameters are available, their slot order, their value ranges and the total footprint used in a universe.

Why the mode matters

A compact white-light mode may expose intensity and CCT, while a larger mode adds tint, effects, pixel control or individual emitter levels. A 16-bit parameter typically combines coarse and fine slots for more control resolution than an 8-bit parameter. The exact layout comes from the manufacturer’s chart.

Practical example

Changing a fixture from a compact mode to an expanded mode can increase its footprint and overlap the next fixture’s address block. Update the console profile and patch, then test intensity, colour and any control-channel functions before saving the setup.

Profile names and firmware

Manufacturers and console libraries may use different names for the same mode. Match the actual channel chart, fixture model and relevant firmware version. A fixture appearing in the library is not sufficient if the loaded profile describes a different generation or a different operating mode.

Equipment examples

The ARRI Orbiter and ARRI SkyPanel X offer control modes with different parameters. Use the matching manufacturer chart and console profile.
