The Creamsource Sky is a legacy 1,200W full-colour LED soft light with six RGBWA engines, a 115° native beam and a separate power supply. It was designed for broad studio and location illumination, including space-light setups and large soft sources.

Sky is the older model, distinct from SpaceX. The Sky head is IP65-rated and passively cooled, but it weighs 23kg and uses a separate 12kg supply. The complete package therefore differs substantially in weather protection, handling and cable layout.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Passive cooling removes fan noise from the head.
  • Broad coverage and full-colour operation suit overhead bases and large-area fills.

Limitations

  • The head and separate supply total 35kg before support, skirt and cables.
  • Legacy wireless hardware should not be assumed to receive CRMX.
  • An IP65 head does not establish that exposed XLR data connections or every part of the power arrangement is weather protected.

Practical uses

SetupWorking approach
Overhead ambienceChoose the skirt and distance to cover the playing area while keeping unwanted light off surrounding scenery.
Large close soft sourceAdd the required diffusion and evaluate reflections from the six-engine face before settling the lamp position.
Remote colour changePatch and test the actual wired or wireless path before rigging high; retain access to the external supply and cable connections.

Output and colour

Creamsource specifies a native 115° beam and optional 50° optics. The optical set trades coverage for concentration. The legacy page does not provide a clearly labelled numeric lux table suitable for reproducing here; meter the actual head, lens and diffusion package at the required distance.

For saturated colours, judge the result on the production camera and actual set materials. A white-light CRI figure does not describe the exposure or spectral behaviour of every colour cue. Record the chosen colour mode, values and modifier for repeat setups.

Power and batteries

The head operates from its matched 48V supply, with a documented 25A maximum head current. That is a high-current head connection, not a direct invitation to use an arbitrary 48V battery. Include the supply, correct header lead and their support in the order.

Control, cooling and camera operation

The legacy manual describes onboard CCT/tint and hue/saturation operation, DMX scenarios and SHoW DMX wireless control. Identify the installed receiver and firmware rather than assuming the Vortex TimoTwo workflow. Use the corresponding DMX chart for white or colour operation.

The manual describes High Speed mode up to 2,000fps. It also separates normal output from Boost Brightness behaviour. Choose the intended mode before exposing and test the scene’s shutter, fade and colour cue together.

Modifiers, rigging and the working package

Sky accepts supported space-light diffusion skirts and optional 50° optical adapters. Check that accessories and head cables are Sky parts rather than superficially similar SpaceX parts. The manual requires attention to its three suspension points and warns that the XLR DMX connectors themselves are not waterproof.

Rental and used-fixture checks

  • Identify Sky rather than SpaceX, including the receiver type and available transmitter.
  • Count the full package: 23kg head, 12kg supply, header cable, yoke, suspension hardware and modifiers.
  • Check protection of data connections and the condition of the specified connector covers.
  • Test the complete cable run and confirm service availability for the actual revision.
