Overview

Dedolight DLH400DT fixture

The Dedolight DLH400DT is a 400/575W discharge-lamp fixture with A-size optics. Its focused beam and DP400 projection options suit directional keys, product work and reflected lighting.

A complete system needs the appropriate DEB400DT ballast, DPOW400DT cable and approved lamp. Daylight and tungsten-colour operation require different lamps, rather than a CCT menu setting.

Key specifications

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Precise focus and substantial projection ecosystem.
  • Approved 400/575W operating configurations.

Limitations

  • External ballast, cable and replaceable lamp.
  • Warm-up, dimming and high-speed settings need checking.

Practical uses

SetupWorking approach
Directional daylightSet the field to the action and trim spill with barn doors or flags.
Projected shapeOrder the DP400 lens, shutter or gobo assembly together.
Lightstream sourceMeter at the subject after the last reflector.

Set the head position for the direction and shadow first, then choose focus and accessories for coverage. A sharp gobo or precisely shuttered image needs imaging optics; closing barn doors around a small spot does not create the same optical result.

Output and colour

Intensified centre readings describe concentrated beams, not the exposure of a broad flood or large bounce. Record lamp power, optic, focus, distance and lit area before comparing an LED or another HMI. Compare the final reflected or projected result when that is how the head will be used.

For a useful comparison, record colour setting or lamp, dimming level, optic, focus position, distance and illuminated area. Measure after diffusion or reflection when that is the working setup. Wattage, centre intensity and coverage describe different parts of the result.

Power and batteries

Use the approved discharge lamp, matching DEB ballast and correct head cable. The DLH200DT, DLH400DT and DLH1200D use different power packages. Head wattage is lamp power, not a complete specification of AC input, power factor or inrush.

Follow the documented connection, strike, cooling and relamping procedure. Keep protective optics and interlocks in service, and do not operate a discharge lamp with damaged protection. Support the ballast and cable independently of the head’s tilt mechanism.

Control, cooling and camera operation

Control pathOperating notes
FocusMechanical beam adjustment at the lamphead.
Dimming/DMXProvided through the documented ballast options and within the approved lamp-power range.
High-speedFrequency selection and lamp condition affect camera results. Test the actual ballast, lamp, frame rate and shutter rather than relying on a general flicker-free claim.

Cooling reference for this head: Passive head; ballast cooling separate. Listen to the complete working package, including its controller or ballast, rather than checking only the head.

Modifiers, rigging and the working package

ItemCompatibility and working notes
Accessory familyA-size; confirm the exact lamphead and accessory compatibility.
ProjectionDP400-family system with the selected lens and shutter/gobo/iris module.
Beam controlCorrect DBD400-class barn doors and approved wide-angle or parallel-beam attachment.
Soft lightCorrect speedring and softbox; include front weight and clearance in the support plan.

Aspheric focusing optics are different from a conventional Fresnel. Check the actual accessory’s compatibility list, locking method and lens choice. A brand name or similar front diameter is not enough to establish fit.

Fit the intended front accessory before choosing the stand position. Check tilt clearance, balance, cable movement and independent support for any external electronics. Use the documented mounting hardware and appropriate secondary retention for the installation.

Alternatives and related fixtures

FixtureReason to compare
Dedolight DLED10-DLarger daylight package than compact DLED heads. 300W class; product detail lists 308W; A-size optical system.
Dedolight DLH652T-DMXContinuous tungsten light with integrated DMX. Up to 650W; approved 300/500/650W lamps; A-size optical system.
Dedolight DLH1200DLarge daylight source with wide-to-tight focus. 1,200W lamp class; 1200-size optical system.

Classic Dedolight DLH4: the original low-voltage tungsten alternative with a separate supply. Compare the full power and accessory package, rather than the bare-head price.

Rental and used-fixture checks

  • Inspect the approved lamp and record lamp hours where available.
  • Verify ballast model, power/frequency modes, head cable and connector condition.
  • Check protective lenses and interlocks, then test the complete warm package with the production camera.

Confirm availability of service and replacement parts with the relevant supplier before buying older equipment. Check the actual kit contents against the shot: a missing controller, imager, lens or cable can matter more than a low head-only price.
