Overview

Dedolight DLH1200D fixture

The Dedolight DLH1200D is a large 1,200W daylight discharge fixture with a built-in aspheric focusing system. It uses 1200-size optical accessories for directional lighting, projection and reflected-light work.

The full package includes an approved lamp, DEB1200D-family ballast and matching head cable. The compact-looking lamphead is still a substantial load once large optics and cable forces are added.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Large daylight source with wide-to-tight focus.
  • Dedicated large projection and beam systems.

Limitations

  • Heavy head, ballast and optics.
  • Substantial electrical load and discharge-lamp requirements.

Practical uses

SetupWorking approach
Distant daylightFocus to the whole action area and inspect edge exposure.
Large patternSelect the DP1200 lens and shutter/gobo module for throw and image size.
Reflected accentsAlign each reflector from camera and check the final subject exposure.

Set the head position for the direction and shadow first, then choose focus and accessories for coverage. A sharp gobo or precisely shuttered image needs imaging optics; closing barn doors around a small spot does not create the same optical result.

Output and colour

The documented ballast dimming range is 50–100%, with a 1,000Hz setting for appropriate high-speed use. That frequency is an operating condition, not a guarantee for every camera and shutter. Confirm the actual ballast revision and test the intended shot.

For a useful comparison, record colour setting or lamp, dimming level, optic, focus position, distance and illuminated area. Measure after diffusion or reflection when that is the working setup. Wattage, centre intensity and coverage describe different parts of the result.

Power and batteries

Use the approved discharge lamp, matching DEB ballast and correct head cable. The DLH200DT, DLH400DT and DLH1200D use different power packages. Head wattage is lamp power, not a complete specification of AC input, power factor or inrush.

Follow the documented connection, strike, cooling and relamping procedure. Keep protective optics and interlocks in service, and do not operate a discharge lamp with damaged protection. Support the ballast and cable independently of the head’s tilt mechanism.

Control, cooling and camera operation

Control pathOperating notes
FocusMechanical beam adjustment at the lamphead.
Dimming/DMXProvided through the documented ballast options and within the approved lamp-power range.
High-speedFrequency selection and lamp condition affect camera results. Test the actual ballast, lamp, frame rate and shutter rather than relying on a general flicker-free claim.

Cooling reference for this head: Passive head; electronic ballast cooling separate. Listen to the complete working package, including its controller or ballast, rather than checking only the head.

Modifiers, rigging and the working package

ItemCompatibility and working notes
Accessory family1200-size optics; these are a different scale from DP400/A-size.
ProjectionDP1200-family lens and approved shutter/gobo/iris assembly.
Beam controlModel-specific barn doors and wide-angle/parallel-beam attachment.
SupportInclude the optic, cable pull and controller arrangement in the working load.

Aspheric focusing optics are different from a conventional Fresnel. Check the actual accessory’s compatibility list, locking method and lens choice. A brand name or similar front diameter is not enough to establish fit.

Fit the intended front accessory before choosing the stand position. Check tilt clearance, balance, cable movement and independent support for any external electronics. Use the documented mounting hardware and appropriate secondary retention for the installation.

Rental and used-fixture checks

  • Inspect the approved lamp and record lamp hours where available.
  • Verify ballast model, power/frequency modes, head cable and connector condition.
  • Check protective lenses and interlocks, then test the complete warm package with the production camera.

Confirm availability of service and replacement parts with the relevant supplier before buying older equipment. Check the actual kit contents against the shot: a missing controller, imager, lens or cable can matter more than a low head-only price.
