sACN, short for streaming ACN, is a network protocol for transporting DMX512-style lighting data. It is specified by ANSI E1.31, using part of the ACN protocol suite.
Universes on a network
A controller can send several universes to compatible nodes or fixtures. Receivers subscribe to or are configured for the required data, depending on the system’s multicast or unicast implementation. The fixture’s personality and starting address still determine how it interprets the received slots.
Practical example
When a fixture receives data but follows the wrong controls, check the network universe, DMX address and mode together. Also confirm which controller is sending the data and how the system handles multiple sources or priorities. Network connectivity alone does not establish a correct patch.
Standards and compatibility
The E1.31-2025 revision includes IPv4 and IPv6 support. Installed equipment may implement an earlier revision or only part of the available functionality. Confirm the capabilities actually supported by the controller, switches, nodes and fixtures rather than assuming a firmware label provides every feature.
Equipment examples
The Aputure LS 600x Pro and ARRI SkyPanel X provide examples of network-capable lights. Verify the supported sACN settings and firmware for the units in use.
